Movember
Changing the face of men’s health

8.11.2024 | News

It’s no news that, generally speaking, men carry out fewer preventive examinations and seek medical help less frequently than women. They often consider themselves to be in good health or, when a problem arises, hope that it will resolve itself. This ‘laissez-faire’ attitude no doubt contributes to their shorter life expectancy.

The Movember movement, launched in Australia in 2003, provides a platform specifically dedicated to men’s health. During the month of November, men are invited to grow moustaches to spark discussions on taboo subjects such as mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. The question they’ll inevitably be asked is: ‘What’s with the moustache?

So isn’t it a bit strange that men are quite familiar with the ‘Pink October’ campaign for women with breast cancer, and are often actively involved in it, making donations and taking part in awareness-raising events, whereas for Movember, many of them don’t really seem to be concerned?

Gentlemen, Movember is for you! If the moustache can help open up a dialogue – great! And if, thanks to this campaign, you’re more concerned about your health – a bit like women are (medical consultations, self-palpations, discussions) – then that’ll be the real success of Movember!
