I hope that by joining the Foundation Board, I can share my passion and support projects and initiatives that give patients hope.

After studying medicine in Lausanne, Dr Jean-Pierre Chevalley worked as an internal medicine assistant in Professor Pierre Magnenat’s department at the CHUV. The humane and comprehensive approach to patient care he witnessed had a profound influence on him. Having begun his thesis in medical oncology, Dr Chevalley went on to undertake surgical training at the University Hospital of Basel, subsequently obtaining his FMH qualification. During his five years’ experience as a senior registrar, he spent a year at St Claraspital, one of Switzerland’s leading centres for visceral surgery specialising in oncology. Dr Chevalley then joined the Clinique de Genolier, where he naturally focused primarily on oncological surgery.

As part of today’s cost-cutting measures, patients are increasingly unable to continue receiving treatment from their trusted doctor. Supportive measures that improve patients’ quality of life are also increasingly being denied funding. These changes have a particularly severe impact on cancer patients and those with chronic conditions, who are already vulnerable. Not all patients being able to compensate with their own financial resources, it is Genolier Foundation that will help to close an important and largely overlooked gap in this area.

Following extensive basic surgical training, Dr Daniel Christen specialised in visceral surgery, with a focus on tumours and chronic conditions. He was a senior physician specialising in visceral surgery at a large city hospital for eight years, after which he became responsible for visceral surgery at Privatklinik Bethanien in 2001. He has gained extensive experience in dealing with the sensitivities and vulnerabilities of patients with these conditions.

I grew up with a father who had polio and Alzheimer’s disease, and I witnessed my mother and sister battle cancer. These ordeals profoundly impacted their daily lives and quality of life, yet they continued to say, “You have to live with it.” Not able to accept that, I joined the foundation, determined to improve care and support for patients with these kinds of conditions.

Patricia Müller-Hafner has extensive experience developing multidisciplinary medical units. After establishing certified Centers of Competence, such as Breast and Oncology Centers, and opening the first Support Care Center for patients with chronic diseases, she seized the opportunity to change direction.
